Eduard Chuvashov, 47, a judge on Moscow’s city court was shot to death in his apartment building at around 8:50 am today, Moscow time. The judge was shot several times in the head and chest while he was leaving for work. He died instantly.

Although police have yet to come up with a motive for the slaying there is a lot of speculation and authorities believe that his murder was work related.

As a top judge on the court, Chuvashov had presided over many complex as well as high profile criminal cases including those of neo-Nazi gangs who were prolific in killing and injuring non-Russians. According to SOVA, a Russian NGO, 60 people were killed and 306 injured last year alone as a result of hate crimes.

The BBC has reported that recently Judge Chuvashov had been receiving death threats but he refused to be accompanied by bodyguards. His picture and other details have been posted on various ultranationalist websites and one of them referred to him as a danger to all Russians.

Neo-Nazi Gangs in Russia

Neo-Nazi and ultranationalist gangs have been a major problem in Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union. Last week, Chuvashov completed the trial of members of the Ryno Gang, named after one of its teenage founders. Since 2006, the gang has been involved in the random killing and injuring of people that had dark skin and appeared not to be Russian. Chuvashov handed down sentences to gang member that ranged from 10 to 20 years.

The White Wolves are a neo-Nazi gang that was formed on April 20 two years ago to commemorate the birthday of Adolph Hitler.
