When you tell your family and friends about traveling to south-east Asia, they'll give you answers like "awesome! I'll go with you!" But then when it comes to finalizing dates, or looking at flights, they'll end up saying "I don't really have the money right now," or "I can't get the time off work." That can be pretty annoying, and ends up putting a lot of people off traveling. People don't realize that traveling solo can be a very rewarding and liberating experience. While traveling with friends is obviously a lot of fun, solo traveling can be a great experience in other ways.
But I'll be lonely!
South-east Asia is one of the best regions of the world to travel on your own. No matter where you go, you will find like-minded people doing the same things as you, which can end up being better than dragging your friends along, when they aren't really as motivated as you to see and do things. When you first arrive, you may be overwhelmed with the culture, climate, sounds, smells, and the fact that you're all alone, but it really doesn't take long to meet new people. Everywhere you go, bars, tourist attractions, flights and buses, you will find people wanting to share their experiences with you. This whole experience really enriches your travels, and opens you to new cultures and ways of thinking. Travel really does broaden the mind, even more so when you're on your own!
