The University of Michigan's athletic director, Dave Brandon, announced his decision to fire Wolverine football coach Rich Rodriguez on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, the day the team was due back for a scheduled start-of-the-semester meeting. The decision ended Rodriguez's three years coaching football at Michigan, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Rich Rodriguez made what many considered a promising start in the Big Ten, arriving in Ann Arbor immediately after winning his second BCS bowl game in three seasons at West Virginia. In 2007, Rodriguez accepted a six-year, $15 million contract with the University of Michigan. He replaced coach Lloyd Carr, who retired that year.
