Bayswater with its excellent transport links and proximity to central London is a popular tourist base. It boasts an illustrious history and a vibrant, cosmopolitan ambience. This short walk along Moscow Road (off Queensway) and up St Petersburgh Place encompasses a Greek Cathedral, a grade one listed Synagogue and the erstwhile homes of the late, great Alexis Korner and Dame Edith Sitwell.
Moscow Road: Home to Bayswater’s Greek Community and Twentieth Century Music Legends
Moscow Road is the hub of the Greek Community in Bayswater. A couple of doors away from the Santorini Taverna which serves good, traditional Greek food is the Athenian Grocery which has been here for over 40 years. Outside you’ll find boxes of fresh vegetables and herbs and inside Greek breads, cheeses, sweetmeats and savouries. This is a “proper shop” which takes you to another place and time.
Just across the road is the Byzantium Cafe where you can sip a cup of Greek coffee, nibble a cheese pie and just watch the world go by.
