Award-winning playwright Helen Kluger and two of the country’s best loved actresses: Imelda Staunton and Tessa Peake-Jones have teamed up for an innovative new approach to drama. Kluger’s play Goose, a two-hander starring Oscar nominated Staunton (Vera Drake, Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix) and TV’s Tessa Peake-Jones (Only Fools & Horses) is exclusively written and produced for the Internet as an audio play for download.
The Plot of Audio Play Goose
Janet Macredie (Imelda Staunton) is serving a jail sentence having being found guilty for the murder of her Godmother. Now, sixteen months later, her appeal is being heard at The Old Bailey. She is accompanied by Prison Officer, Margaret Hoist (Tessa Peake-Jones). Having been blackmailed by a former prisoner, who alleged sexual impropriety, losing another prisoner who escapes on a day’s outing, and having tests for a serious illness; the last sixteen months have been equally traumatic for her. Now both of there lives are about to change.
Top Performances Imelda Staunton & Tessa Peake-Jones
The power of this play with a twist in the tale is both in the writing and the acting of its two formidable stars. Imelda Staunton's Janet Macredie fills in the pictures through her subtle characterisation of this sardonic and mysterious woman weaving the listener in and out of the "did she or didn't " with remarkable skill. Peake-Jones Margaret is not the normal one dimensional caricature usually associated in the potrayal of prison officers. Peake-Jones breathes life into Hoist giving her a sympathetic demeanour without being sentimental.
Goose a Thrilling Audio Drama
Kluger by juxtaposing both the characters monologues reveals their traumatic stories building to a thrilling climax. The director Celia de Wolff juggles the ambient atmosphere brilliantly so the listener is there in the claustrophobic cell gripped to the very end.
Download Audio Plays & Listen on an Ipod
This is surely the new way to capture an audience who can listen to real quality drama when they want to and where they want to. Not only on the internet but on plane, boat and train.
"I love radio," says Kluger in a face to face interview on the 10th Sept. "I love writing for radio and the freedom it gives you artistically to roam and explore without constraint. I realised that the Internet also has that freedom and is a great place to offer original work that could bring new audiences to drama. I love the idea of audiences being able to download plays, as they would do music, and to listen to whenever they like. This is surely the new way to capture an audience who can listen to real quality drama not only on the computer but on planes boats and trains, and ipods! "
